You probably have heard of the term hydrotherapy – a type of treatment that uses water as the primary medium. Colon hydrotherapy is the cleansing of the colon through a tube inserted in the rectum. While hydrotherapy is safe, the question is it is really safe for pregnant women? Colon hydrotherapy while pregnant would depend on what term you are already in and should be best advised by your doctor. It is generally safe during the second trimester but there should be extra precautions during the first and third trimester as it can be a possible cause of spontaneous abortion or preterm labor, respectively, during these periods.

A person undergoing colon hydrotherapy would need a small catheter to be inserted in the rectum. It is through the tube inserted into the rectum that the water is introduced to the colon. The water is gently pumped in and drained from the lower intestine naturally or gets removed of the body through gentle suction.

What is the purpose of colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy is done to help get rid of waste materials and toxins from the colon. It is highly recommended for patients suffering from constipation, bloating, and other gastrointestinal related concerns. The water introduced to the body is usually warm, but not too hot. It matches the core temperature of the body. However, colon hydrotherapy does come with some discomfort too such as diarrhea. It is one of the common side effects of colon hydrotherapy. The patient who undergoes colon hydrotherapy is highly encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

If you are pregnant and you are planning to undergo colon hydrotherapy, the best thing to do is to ask the advice of your doctor. While hydrotherapy is generally safe, some situations and health conditions may hinder you from doing so. Only health professionals are capable to gauge whether having colon hydrotherapy is safe for you or not. Always keep in mind that although colon hydrotherapy does come with so many advantages, there are a few side effects. At the end of the day, your safety should always be the top priority.
