Covid-19 pandemic has thrown the world into chaos. This virus, which is deadly, spreads so easily from one person to another person. As in August 2020, 25 million people were infected around the world and 9000 of that number comes from Malaysia. This figure is expected to keep on increasing from day to day basis. Typically, the first symptom that people infected with Covid-19 will have is a cough. However, not all coughs come from Covid-19. Coughing alone can mean anything. It is usually a healthy reflex and can go away on its own after some time. If a cough does not resolve, you can try some home remedies to treat your cough.

Drink plenty of fluids

When you are having a cough, it might make you dehydrated. Drinking lots of water will help your body to stay hydrated. Plus, it can also thin your mucus and make your throat moist and comfortable. Any type of drink except alcohol, carbonated and caffeinated drinks is suitable to be taken at least eight glasses a day. Of course, the more the better.

Try some honey

Honey contains anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce a sore throat. One study found that it works just as good as over-the-counter medicine in treating coughs. Consider taking one tablespoon of honey everyday. If you like to drink tea, try adding some honey into your favourite drink. However, do not give honey to children under 1 year-old.

Sip a hot drink

Warm liquids such as warm water, hot tea or even chicken soup can help to heat up your airways. Not only the liquid keeps you hydrated, the warmness will also provide immediate relief for a sore and scratchy throat. You might also want to consider drinking ginger tea or spicy root drink if you are having a bad cough.

Use air humidifier

Dry air, which is common in heated homes will likely trigger and aggravate your cough. This is where the air humidifier comes into play. This machine is made to add moisture to the air. Try using a humidifier in your room, especially at night. It can help to clean the air and make it comfortable for you to sleep.

Avoid irritants

Some people are sensitive to dust and smoke. It is advisable to stay away from these irritants as it can enter your airways and triggers your cough reflex. Some common irritants include dust, smoke, pollen, perfumes or pet hair.

Gargle saltwater

If you have some table salt at home, then you can try this traditional remedy. A study published by American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that it can help soothe inflamed throat and clear bacteria. Just dissolve ½ teaspoon of table salt into a glass of warm water, gargle it then spit it out. Do it several times a day.

Over-the-counter medicine

If home remedies do not improve your cough, it might be a good time to try some over-the-counter (OTC) medicine. This medicine can be bought easily from any nearby pharmacy or drugstore. There are two types of cough medicine available: cough suppressants and expectorants.

Normally, you do not need any medical care for an average cough. You just need to give your body time to recover from it. However, a cough that is accompanied by other symptoms might indicate something more serious. Consider seeing your doctor quickly if you have a cough with fever, shortness of breath, coughing up yellow-green coloured mucus or blood. Make sure to take care of your health properly, especially during this difficult time.
